Holiday History

We go through the motions every year:  finding the perfect tree, carefully setting it up in our homes, decorating with ornaments and candy canes, strings of popcorn, stars, and other decorations both traditional and sentimental.  Pine and holly wreaths adorn our front doors.  Nativity scenes and winter villages announce quietly that the holiday spirit thrives.

Cinnamon and vanilla waft through the house bringing promises of holiday treats to please family and friends alike.  The sounds of the season lend their familiarity to your holiday rituals, rituals and traditions that have been passed down through generations as well as their more modern and family-unique counterparts.

How many of us stop amidst the flutter and flurry of holiday cheer to consider where our traditions came from?  Christmases past have molded Christmas present, which will shape Christmas future for our children.  What can we teach our families about the traditions that we have?  How can hundreds of years of Christmas celebrations help us understand the holiday season that we now enjoy?

By learning the history of our traditions , we can engender a holiday spirit that will mean something to our future generations and their families.  Make your holiday memories more meaningful this year by heading over to the History Channel’s mini-site loaded with holiday history.  Not only will it be entertaining, but also it could spark an interest in history to which your child has not yet been open.

Although I celebrate Christmas exclusively, there isn’t just Christmas information on this site.  I’ve been exploring the Hanukkah section as well as the Kwanzaa section.  There is so much information here about everything from the history of candy canes to Santa Claus to cultural differences in the holiday celebration .  Take your children on a tour of Christmas past and inspire their Christmas future!

As promised, I will be reviewing one of my favorite holiday movies for you and it accompanies your Christmas history exploration perfectly.  Be sure to check back soon to hear all about the movie Silent Night .
